Lets get the bad bit out of the way early and that is the access, the lock gets very busy with traffic and the gate to the campsite is kept locked and unfortunately there isn't enough room between the road and the gate to pull in, unlock and open it so you have to park with the car on the drive and the caravan in the road which isn't a happy place to be.

That over lets move onto the good stuff and it outweighs the access issue, the site is well maintained, the staff friendly and they have a nice clean washing up area and W.C. There is plenty of space and parked up on a canal lock is pretty good really with a fair bit of boating going on to watch.

You can walk either way from the lock, left towards Maldon or right towards Chelmsford. We chose right because we knew there is a great cafe at Paper Mill Lock but it does take around an hour and a bit to walk at a steady pace so keep that in mind as it is then another hour plus back to Hoe Mill although the cakes are worth it.

All in all a great find and one to go back to but I think early booking is advised as it get very busy in the summer
