After looking on the wbsite to check that me and my brother inlaw and a friend could visit and nothing told us other wise, I called ahead and again asked if I could stay, as I didnt need an electric hook up I was told to just turn up. I arrived and as there was more than 2 adults in 1 tent we were turned away. Even though it was a 6 man tent. This was after I got a rather disgusted "certainly not" when the Lady at the camp site found out that we were all male. I had never felt any more humiliated and discriminated against in my whole life. I had travelled quite a way, hense why I called and checked in advance. I asked if they could suggest anywhere else, and they were very unhelpful. we tried a few places after this then returned to the site. When I asked the site owners again if they could help us find another place to stay, they again were un helpful and started to become quite abrupt, suggetsing I had made up the call, and they would never have allowed us to stay and would never have said yes on the phone, as they would not allow any single sex couples or groups, which I find extremely offensive. I was totally dissapointed and felt majorly let down.

We found on arrival that the owners of the site were very obnoxious, rude, abrupt and un-accommodating. We arrived at the site at 9.45pm after a 70 mile drive with a five week old baby and a 3 year old child. Our family consisted of seven adults, two babies and one dog. The owner of the site ran out of her house waving her arms and shouting we don’t accommodate groups on the site. We explained to the lady that we were not a group we are a family and had pre- booked during that week and had given details of gender, ages of family members etc to her husband who had taken the booking. She began screaming at us and accusing us of being liars and said that they would never book three tents onto their site as they don’t have space for that many tents. We politely told the lady that we had travelled quite a long way and had a five week old baby with us, this did not bother her and she told us that she had had problems with people like us before and that we could not stay on her site. We asked her what she meant by ‘people like you’ and asked how she could judge our family before she had even spoken to us. We are a decent, hardworking and responsible family having a weekend break. We had politely tried to reach a solution with the owner to resolve the problem, the owner’s husband sat in the living room watching out of the window. The lady threatened to call the police, which I still don’t understand as we had not and were not causing any trouble, all we wanted was to pitch our tents and have a sleep before exploring the area the following day. The site is advertised to be family friendly with relaxing surroundings. Our family did not find our experience of this particular campsite or the owners to be welcoming or friendly and would certainly not recommend it to anyone.

We found a site called Riverside Holiday Park a little further down the road and explained to the staff what had happened at Highburn House and the staff there bent over backwards to accommodate our family for the weekend and we all had a lovely time.

We found that the owners of the site were very rude, abrupt and unfair to us. This would have been the 4th time we had visited this site and each time we were in a mixed group of around 12 people. When we arrived, we were never asked if we were part of a group or meeting others there, yet this was the reason the owner gave as a reason to evict us from the site! The owner claimed that they dont accomadate groups of more than two tents on the site. This was basically a lie as there was a group of around 20 people on one side of the site. We got the impression from the owner that we were being thrown off the site as we are in our mid-20's. We had pitched our tents around 1pm and went into Wooler to watch the World Cup on TV yet returned at around 5pm to find that the owner had phoned the police as we were not off the site in 15mins! We politely advised the lady that we could not leave the site as we had had a drink and were unable to drive. This did not bother her and she told the police to get us off the site.

The police were very good, they showed understanding and helped us try and find a solution. The police eventually persuaded the owner that the ones who had had a drink could leave their cars over night.

We had politely tried to reach a solution with the owner to resolve the problem, the owners husband originally said we could stay providing we booked in furture! We offered to move our tents to the other side of the field so we were out the way of other campers (who incidentally had no complaints towards us and were just as shocked and annoyed at the owner for making us move) but it looked as though she had an agenda towards younger people as she was very rude, devious and underhand in trying to have us removed from the site. She even resorted to lying to the police to back up her claims. Something which we alerted the police to. Unfortunately however the police were powerless as it was private property.

I could understand the owners request to have us off the site if we were being loud and were annoying other campers, however we pitched our tents, we conversed with other campers on the site and had a very good relationship with them. They were very very suprised that we had been told to leave. One couple said they would never go back to Highburn House again!

I feel that we were treated very unfairly and we thrown off the site for the simple reason we were 'younger'. The owner claimed we had never been to the site before, however we had been every year for the last 4 years and even had pictures on facebook!

I will never return to Highburn House again, in future myself and my friends will go to Riverside Holiday Park on the other side of Wooler. We were able to find space at Riverside and the staff were very understanding and accomodating and had no issue with us being in a group as long as we were respectful of others in the site, which I believe is very reasonable and something myself and my friends are very wary of whenever we have been away.

To close I would never recommend Highburn House to any of my family, friends or work colleagues.
